Russian gun barge no. 2

The wreck of a burnt wooden vessel lies on its side with her bow facing north. It is likely a Russian gun barge that took part during the Second Battle of Svensksund. Gun barges number 1 and number 2 were built at a shipyard in Kronstadt in 1790. Gun barge no. 2 sailed under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Freyer. During the battle, it was hit six times close to the waterline. The flooding was stopped, but the galley Tsestnaja sailed too close and accidentally cut the barge’s grapnel anchor rope. The Russians abandoned the rudderless ship. The Swedes had the abandoned vessel towed ashore Luotsi-Kuusinen and burned it.
