Galley Tikhvin

The remains of a wooden wreck west of Lehmäsaari are likely to be those of a Russian galley. Due to their large surface area, galleys were hard to steer in stormy weather. The wreck is possibly the Tikhvin, completed in 1775, that sailed under the command of Lieutenant Commander Kurganov. During the Second Battle of Svensksund, a heavy wind pushed the galleys towards Lehmäsaari. Kurganov tried to steer the vessel away from the island, but the damaged Tikhvin was filled with water. The crew of this vessel also evacuated ashore Lehmäsaari. After the battle, there were over 3,000 Russian soldiers on the island that became prisoners of the Swedish.
