Galley Nerva

The remains of two badly disintegrated wooden wrecks west of Lehmäsaari are likely to be Russian galleys. The long and narrow structure of the galleys made them susceptible to winds. During the Second Battle of Svensksund, a hard southwestern wind pushed the Russian galleys towards the north shore of Lehmäsaari. Many were shipwrecked. One of these galleys was Nerva that was built at the St. Petersburg galley shipyard in 1774. It became damaged in the cannon fire and filled with water on the rocks on the shore of Lehmäsaari. The crew were evacuated ashore. After the battle, the Swedes burned the galley.
