Frigate Saint Nicholas
The best known of the Svensksund wrecks is the Russian archipelago frigate Saint Nicholas that rests in the middle of a busy shipping lane. It sank during the Second Battle of Svensksund amid heavy fire. Saint Nicholas, completed in Kronstadt in 1790, sailed under the command of Captain Marshall. The vessel was heavily damaged in battle, but Marshall would not surrender. The leaking vessel listed on its side and sank in an instance, taking with it the wounded Marshall and most of the crew. A few survivors escaped on board frigate Maria.
