Flag galley Hitraja

The wreck on the northern shores of Pirkköyri island may be Hitraja, the largest galley of the Russian archipelago fleet that took part in the Second Battle of Svensksund. Hitraja was completed in St. Petersburg in 1769. She sank during the First Battle of Svensksund, but the Russians were able to recover and repair her. During the second battle, the vessel sailed under the command of Adjutant Mombillier. According to stories, Hitraja suffered heavy damage during the battle and the wind pushed it towards the battle lines. The Swedes tried to save the vessel by pulling it to the shores of Pirkköyri- where it eventually sank.
